How Skin Tans

Tanning takes place in the skin's outermost layer, the epidermis. Within the epidermis lie special cells called melanocytes which, when exposed to UVB light, are stimulated and start the melanogenesis process, which is how melanin, the skin's natural pigment is produced. Melanin is then carried up through the epidermis by the skin's natural renewal process. When exposed to UVA light, the melanin oxidizes and darkens further. Melanin is responsible for giving skin its tanned appearance and also acts as a natural sunscreen --in fact, without it, the skin would burn when exposed to UV light.

It is important to know that although everyone has about the same amount of melanocytes, your genes determine how much melanin your melanocytes will produce (how dark you get).

Start off with less time, and build your time as you go. Avoid sunburn, always cover your eyelids, and when outdoors, wear sunscreen.  Tanning at Sundance offers a controlled environment blocking out harmful UVC rays.
