Spray tan booths use a spray on process designed to deliver a customized sunless tanning application to each person based on body size, skin type and desired color. For each profile, there are generally up to 3 level-options available to produce optimal results.
Inside the spray room, you will disrobe and apply barrier cream to appropriate areas and put on hair bonnet (optional booties and nose piece may be available). Customers may tan without covering their hair; the solution does not penetrate the hair follicle but may discolor light /gray hair slightly.
With the push of a button the session begins with a fine mist being sprayed through several nozzles for just seconds! We suggest you hold your breath during the actual misting session which lasts 5 to 13 seconds for each ‘pass’; there are 2 to 4 ‘passes’ per spray session with time between each pass. Once done spraying, you will gently towel off or fan dry depending on equipment used. In just 4 – 6 hours, you will see a quick natural-looking tan that continues to darken throughout the day. If a cosmetic bronzing solution is used (in most cases), you will see their bronze results in less than 60 seconds!
How long do I have to wait before I shower?
Sundance Tanning recommends that customers wait a minimum of 4 hours before showering to give the active ingredient, DHA, enough time to fully set. When you shower, you may notice the cosmetic bronzer washing off but the DHA will remain and continues to create the bronze tan color.
How long will my ‘color’ last?
Your ‘color’ will last approximately 5 – 7 days. Your color is not a real tan and will not provide any sun protection like a real tan may provide. Always wear an SPF when tanning outdoors – especially during the hours from 10 a.m. to 2:p.m.
Will the solution turn me orange?
No! In the past, self-tanners gave customers an unnatural orange glow and caused streaking. Most of these results were caused by improper or ineffective application. Excessive amounts, applied in single applications (including creams and lotions) can give an orange glow to the skin. Unnatural dark spots may also appear in dry or thick skin areas such as elbows, knees, and knuckles. Today’s advanced spray tanning solutions and equipment provide a much more even application which practically eliminates the orange look and streaking.
What do I wear?
Many people don’t wear anything; the room is completely private. You may wear a swim suit or undergarment if you prefer. The cosmetic bronzers in spray solutions are water soluble but the DHA in the solution may stain clothing; thus, it is advised that customers wear old clothing. After the session is over, and you are dry, loose clothing is recommended to be worn out; it will rub less against your skin.
Will the spray solution hurt my eyes?
No; there is nothing in the mist that will harm your eyes. The solutions are tested for customer safety. On the other hand, eye protection is provided for FREE if you prefer to wear it; be sure to fit it snug beneath your eyes. Will ‘Sunless’ Spray Tanning make my skin have an unpleasant smell?
Sunless solutions have made a lot of advancements in this area; many solutions are scented and smell very pleasant when applied. Some customers have commented that they noticed a ‘starchy’ smell on their skin; if so, this is due to the DHA chemical reaction with the protein cells in one’s skin – a natural reaction. The smell dissipates and is usually not noticeable to others around them.
Are there ways to enhance the ‘Sunless’ results?
Yes, Sundance Tanning recommends that you shower, shave, and exfoliate prior to using ‘Sunless’ equipment. Abstain from using heavy moisturizers / fragrances just prior to your session. Some equipment manufacturers encourage the use of an approved moisturizer / primer that helps to balance the PH levels in the skin. After waiting 4 – 6 hours after your spray session, it is important to moisturizer with a tan extending product to help your color last longer; Sundance Tanning carries a full line of ‘Sunless’ products. Receive a 25% discount on all sunless products on the day of your sunless session.
If I spray tan, can I tan in tanning beds on the same day?
Yes, in fact some customers have found that tanning with UV rays and spray tanning provides an overall better looking tan. If customers desire to do this, we recommend that they tan in a tanning unit first (without lotion) and then spray tan.
Because I have fair skin, I have never been able to tan before. Will a ‘Sunless’ spray tan give me a tan?
‘Sunless’ spray tanning will give you the desired ‘color’ you are looking for but, it will not give you a real tan. A real tan is a natural process involving the skin which when exposed to UV light will produce melanin which in turn produces pigment in the skin – known as a tan. Is ‘Sunless’ spray tanning safer than tanning indoors?
A ‘Sunless’ spray tan does not involve UV light thus; it can be regarded as safer. However, there are a lot of known health benefits for the human body involving moderate exposure to UV light. The danger with UV light when tanning indoors or outdoors or playing, exercising, and /or working outdoors is not exposure to UV light but … repeated - overexposure to it that has been known to damage the skin - possibly causing Basal and Squamous Cell carcinomas. For optimal results, Sundance Tanning recommends that first time spray tan customers plan two spray sessions within 48 hours; the first session works as a ‘primer coat’ session and the second session gives the customer their ‘final coat’. Individual sessions thereafter should provide the desired color / degree of results. Sundance Tanning require that new spray tan customers watch a 3-5 minute instructional video that illustrates and explains the sunless process for the type of equipment the salon offers.
